Glass railings deliver uninterrupted views and a premium feel — but a railing is a life-safety system first and a design element second. The hardware determines which one you actually get.
The Main Systems
- Spigots: floor-mounted mini-posts clamping the glass — the clean, semi-frameless look for balconies and pool fencing.
- Standoff pins: side-mounted discs bolting glass to the stair stringer or slab edge — the floating-glass look.
- U-channel base: continuous aluminium channel gripping the glass bottom edge — fastest install, fully frameless from above.
- Baluster systems: SS posts with clamps — economical and forgiving on uneven sites.
Glass Specification
Railings should use toughened laminated glass (e.g., 6+6 mm or 8+8 mm with PVB/SGP interlayer). If one layer ever fails, the interlayer holds the panel in place — a critical difference from plain toughened glass at height.
Load Requirements
Residential railings must resist a horizontal load at handrail height; commercial and public spaces require more. Always follow local building norms and use hardware with declared load test data.
Material & Maintenance
Outdoors, SS-304 is the minimum; coastal sites need SS-316. Rinse fittings quarterly to clear dust and salts, and torque-check anchors yearly.
