Glass hardware rarely fails suddenly — it warns you first. Catching these signs early is the difference between a quick fitting swap and an expensive glass replacement (or an accident).
1. The Door Drifts or Won't Stay Shut
A door that creeps open or closed on its own usually means the floor spring has lost oil pressure or its bearing is worn.
2. Oil Stains Around the Floor Plate
Hydraulic oil seeping from under the cover plate is terminal for a floor spring — replacement, not repair, is the answer.
3. Slamming Despite Adjustment
If speed valves no longer change the closing behaviour, the internal valving has failed.
4. Rust Spots or Pitting on Fittings
Corrosion on patches or hinges weakens their clamp on the glass. On coated hardware, bubbling finish means rust underneath.
5. Visible Glass Movement in the Clamp
If the door shifts within its patch fittings, gaskets have compressed or hardened. This needs immediate attention — the glass is no longer securely held.
6. Grinding or Clicking Sounds
Debris or worn bearings in the pivot path. Brief noises after cleaning are fine; persistent grinding is not.
7. A Sticking, Heavy Lock
Forcing a worn cylinder eventually snaps the key inside. Replace the cylinder at the first sign of roughness.
