Every piece of glass hardware is designed around one material: toughened (tempered) glass. Understanding it helps you specify doors and partitions that are safe and durable.
What Makes Glass 'Toughened'?
Ordinary annealed glass is heated to ~620°C and rapidly cooled. This locks the surface in compression, making the glass 4–5× stronger. If it ever breaks, it crumbles into small blunt granules instead of dangerous shards — which is why building codes mandate it for doors.
Common Thicknesses
- 8 mm: shower doors, small cabinet panels
- 10 mm: standard partition panels, lighter doors
- 12 mm: frameless entrance doors, tall partitions, heavy-traffic areas
The One Rule You Cannot Break
Toughened glass cannot be cut, drilled or notched after tempering. Every hole for a handle, every notch for a patch lock must be finalised on the drawing before the glass goes into the furnace. This is why hardware selection must happen at design stage, not after.
Hardware Compatibility
Every fitting has a glass-thickness range — a 10–12 mm patch fitting will not grip 8 mm glass safely. Matching hardware rating to glass thickness and door weight is the foundation of a safe installation.
